Canada’s National Sustainable Forest Management Standard
Tolko Industries is pursuing the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Z809 forestry certification standard. In mid - 2003 Tolko Manitoba Woodlands initiated a process to develop a CSA Z809-02 Sustainable Forest Management Plan with the goal of achieving forest certification registration by the end of 2004.
The CSA Z809 Sustainable Forest Management standard outlines the requirements that Tolko Manitoba must follow to demonstrate to customers and the public that forests are managed in an inclusive, responsible and sustainable manner. Also, the CSA-SFM standard is consistent with the ISO 14001 environmental management system standard, which includes the continuum of establishing a policy – planning, - implementation/operation – checking/corrective action – management review.
As part of the adaptive management process there is a need to recognize the need to modify and streamline processes and to make modifications to reflect practical solutions to operating requirements, while meeting the goals and objectives of the SFM System for FML Area No. 2. As such, several of the original indicators within the performance framework for the DFA are being reviewed for potential modification. Suggested modifications to the applicable indicators are being reviewed with the FRAC Committee. The changes to the indicators will be brought forward and incorporated into the SFM performance framework for the DFA. In 2009 the SFM committee began a major revision of the plan to meet the updated requirements of the Z809:2008 standard. This revision is expected to be completed in 2010.
It is noted that no changes to the values or objectives associated with any of these indicators. Changes reviewed and implemented are to one or more of: management strategies, implementation processes and/or monitoring and reporting processes.
In October 2004 Tolko Manitoba Woodlands successfully registered to the Canadian CSA Z809:2002 standard.
Tolko Manitoba CSA-SFM Advisory Committee
Tolko Manitoba initiated a CSA-SFM advisory committee in June 2003 after a public awareness process on sustainable forest management. Throughout the month of May 2003 the Company discussed the CSA process at the Annual Operating Plan public meetings held in various communities located across the Forest Management License Area. Following the public meetings the Company sent out letters of invitation to interested citizens to attend the first (June 4, 2003) CSA-SFM meeting and to consider joining an advisory committee. The first formal meeting of the CSA-SFM advisory committee was held on June 24 and 25, 2003 followed by 6 more sessions over the following year. The committee focused on setting local values, objectives, indicators and targets around the six national criteria.
