PUBLIC PARTICIPATION

The Company recognizes the importance, and the need for public and user group consultation as an important component of forest management planning.  Both formal and informal approaches have been developed over the years by the Company to reflect community values, as well as address specific sites and concerns of both individuals and groups.

Forest Management License Area (FMLA)– Forest Resource Advisory Committee (FRAC)

In 1996 the Company established the FRAC to serve as an ongoing forum where representatives from across FMLA can share knowledge, interests, views, values and concerns with respect to forest management activities.  This forum is intended to allow for open, fair and orderly discussion on these matters.  The ongoing committee includes representatives from a broad cross-section of stakeholders across the FMLA.  Currently the committee meets about 3 times per year.

Annual Plan Public Information Meetings

Each year prior to the Annual Harvest and Renewal Plan being submitted to Manitoba Conservation for approval, the Company holds public information meetings across the FMLA, including Winnipeg.  A large cross-section of the public is invited via a letter of invitation to these meetings.  The meetings are also advertised in local newspapers/radio/community bulletin boards to ensure the general public is aware and has an opportunity to participate.  The meetings are used to inform the public about the specific forest management activities that are planned on the FMLA during the upcoming year.  The meetings generate general discussions with local resource users and the general public; and, the process allows the Company to consider public concerns in the further development of the Annual Operating Plan.
